The departing train leaves
Flatbush Ave
at 9:08 am on Sunday the 15th, (leaves Jamaica station at 9:40) and
arrives in Riverhead at 11:23.
Chris & Eve will pick people up, we just need to know
how many so we have enough cars.

We will drop people at the train departing Speonk Station (Montauk Line)
at 4:46, arriving at Flatbush at 6:36 p.m. (Jamaica 6:18 pm).

Bike Ride Option:

The bike ride will be a 3 mile bike ride from the Riverhead station
to the farm.
You will need a bike permit in order to take your bike on the train
so people will have to already have one
(you can get them from any window @ penn station or window 27 at
Grand Central Station). They cost 5 bucks and last a lifetime.
The LIRR also require that you have an "elastic cord" to secure your
bike.
If you are interested in the bike ride, please contact Ryan for
coordinate.

Ryan's info if you want to contact her:
ryanlachica@gmail.com or cell:718 781 1195

Driving Directions to Garden of Eve:

Take the Long Island Expressway to exit 71.
Make a left at the stop sign onto Rt 24 North/Edwards Ave.
Go through one light and keep going straight until you come to a
second light at a T intersection.
Make a Right onto Sound Ave.
Go approx 6 miles until you pass Briermere farm on the left, we are
the next farm on the left (North) side.
If you pass Northville Tpk and the "Gabrielsen" farm stand you have
gone too far.

SWAP OCT.21st for OCT.14th

I'm looking for a "A" weeker to swap with me their share this upcoming sat. I would say that
we are experiencing a seasonal shift in what is growing on the farm and
that is the biggest difference in quantity and quality in the the past 2
weeks. Crops that were producing quality vegetables such as tomatoes have
been hit with late blight and excessive water from rain causing cracking.
Additionally tomatoes do not rippen when the night time temperature falls
below 60 degrees so there are a lot of green tomatoes and not enough ripe
ones. As a result of these conditions, the wholesale market is even in
search of quality tomatoes and paying record prices. Other crops such as
broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, turnips, collard greens
and rudabaga are doing well and should be bountiful in the next two or
three weeks. We are just starting to harvest fall kale, which you
recieved this week and will get plenty of this fall.

Sorry I didn't share all the hardships with you but we did loose a lot of
head lettuce that was set out in the field as transplants in late August.
We spent the day transplanting and then were hit with record heat causing
many varrieties to bolt prematurely. So lettuce and many greens were hit
hard and are in short supply. Excess water caused spinach leaves to turn
yellow and then burn in the sunlight. We lost 3,000 plants all cared for
for 40 days. Just bear with us on the greens, you will be getting plenty
as they grow better with the cooler nights we have been having the last 2
weeks. It is easy to forget about the heat wave we had with cooler
weather lately, but plants do not forgive or adjust as quickly as humans.

We just started digging sweet potatoes, and we have plenty of potatoes in
the ground. We also just harvested 6,500 pounds of winter squash and it
all looks great and is curing in our greenhouse. You will receive some
this week. Varrieties include acorn, buttercup, butternut, speghetti and
kabocha. We also have about 1 acre of beets and 1/2 acre of fall carrots
that are doing well. We held off on both this week because they were a
little too small.

We could offer larger quanities of fewer varrieties to make people happy.
For example 5lb bag of sweet potatoes and 5lb bag of potatoes. That would
be a $17.50 value alone and then one or two additonal items to equal
$20.00 in value. I considered that last week but opted for a little more
diversity. It is important to not loose sight of the value of the share
the preveous 15 weeks in which the value exceeded $20.00. I appreciated
all of the possitive feedback I received up until last week when I was
greeted by many members who thanked me for the bountiful harvest and
diversity of beautiful vegetables. We did have two items at our stand this
week that we did not grow but were grown by two other organic farms. One
of our friends asked us if we could sell them for him because he was away.
Everything else is grown on our farm and you will be receiveing the same
vegetable varieties in the coming weeks.

As far as eggs go we did order eggs from another farm to make up the
difference this week but they did not make it to the stand by the time of
distribution. We do not sell eggs at our farmstand at the market or in
Riverhead on the farm. We will make up or reinburse the differnce for
those who were shorted.

To alieviate future problems it is important to have good communicaiton.
We have not had any complaints from the other 5 locations where we deliver
CSA shares and they receive exactly the same as you. Most of those have a
weekly newsletter and call or e-mail to see what is new on the farm. We
should talk about how to make that happin.

Most every farm that provides CSA shares also has other markets and other
means to sell vegetables and goods to make a living in farming. Farming
can be very rewarding occupation but very difficult to make a living for a
family. The relationship we have with the Williamsburg CSA is an
important part of our life and success of our farm. We are constantly
reading, planning and learning to make our farm better. We try not to
blame our failure on the weather as we can't change it and we never look
for ways to cut corners. Every week we review the quantiy of what we have
on the farm to decide what we can offer our members. We are always aware
of the value we are providing each week. Although the Astoria CSA charges $378 for a full share (once a week), we were willing to pay Williamsburg CSA $357 for an every two week half veg, half fruit share from Garden of Eve Farm because your pick up was convenient.

We have not gotten anything resembling our money's worth. Ironically, last year's season was a tough one for local farmers, as I'm sure you know. Yet the Green Thumb Farm, the farm for Astoria CSA, still managed to get at least two varieties of leafy greens to us each week, and the tomatoes and squash kept coming. Every week we had two or three *full* bags of food. The reason we signed up for a half share with you is because we really had too much food last year. Now, in a summer with plenty of rain, we don't even have enough to last a week.

We should have recognized that this would be a disappointing experience from our first interaction with Williamsburg CSA and the Garden of Eve Farm. Williamsburg CSA never provided us with notice of the first week's pickup time and so we came at 11:15, and the food was all gone. People were still there, but no food. Presumably if we had gotten there on time, but had been last, we would still have gotten no food. We approached the Garden of Eve Farm at the farm stand and the staff gave us no help at all. Neither party has offered to make this up to us, so we paid for food that we did not get. Assuming that we will receive 15 shares this growing season, your combined refusal to provide us with a substitute share cost us approximately $23 in lost food budget.

As the season has gone on, we have found many other issues to be problematic.

Leafy greens have been nearly nonexistent (sometimes we get a little bag of mescalun mix and I think we got kale once, but that is all that I can recall. When we retrieved our share this Saturday, we found that the end of summer, Labor Day pickup had no greens.

The quality of the produce has also been very disappointing. The Labor Day tomato share (presumably the season's largest) consisted of one heirloom tomato, and a bucket of cherry tomatoes. The heirloom tomato rotted in two days, and the cherry tomatoes are of a variety that is so tough that they are only suitable for cooking. We also received several apples with this weeks share. One of the apples was so mealy as to be ineddible and another rotted through by Tuesday.

Your distribution policy for herbs is absurd and practically worthless. Whereas last year's farm bound the week's herbs into a useable packet, you offer one sprig of herbs. Rosemary, we can understand, you really only need a sprig, but basil?, thyme?, oregano? lavender?. We are certain that this is not how Garden of Eve Farm would chose to sell herbs to a customer purchasing from its farmstand, if it did then no customer would buy those herbs. Yet Garden of Eve Farm allows Williamsburg CSA to tell it's members to "take one or two sprigs" when we have already paid good money to sustain the farm. Again, by contrast, at this time last year, we had so much basil from the Astoria CSA that we made several pints of pesto to freeze for the winter.

We believe strongly in supporting local agriculture and sustainable farming. We understand that the CSA itself is a volunteer organization and that they got off to a rocky start. But the Garden of Eve Farm is a business and we consider ourselves customers of this business. Very unsatisfied customers.

We are sad to say that, next year, we will have to find another farm to support. Given the disappointing nature of this experience, we will also not patronize your farm stand at McCarren Park Greenmarket.

Regretfully yours,
Eva and Patrick Barnhart

Produce Storage Bags

So you can buy these re-usable storage bags that prolong the life of your produce - important for CSA. They're called "Evert-Fresh Green Bags", and they really work - your produce stays fresh days longer than it would with ordinary bags - apparently by allowing certain ripening gases to escape. (I have no financial interest in the company - I just think it's a great item for people to know about.)

10 bags were $6.67 at the East 4th Street co-op (the last food co-op in Manhattan) and they are washable and re-usable many times over. They are also nicely sized for CSA portions. Also apparently available at Whole Foods and other natural foods stores.

www.evertfresh.com
979-885-0340

cheers!

swap

Are there any B weekers that would be able to swap with my A week. Add the garlic, onions, turnips and carrots and cook for 5 minutes. Add the kale, chourico, bay leaves, parsley and thyme and mix well. Add the beef stock, beans and tomatoes. Bring the soup to a boil, and then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, bring salted water to a boil and add the diced potatoes. Cook until tender, about 10 minutes. In the meantime celebrate falls bounty of squashes, hearty greens, and tree-ripened delicacies such as pears and succulent New York State apples. Over 15 varieties bless us, notably the Macoun, McIntosh, Courtland and Northern Spy. Apple pies, crisps, strudels, and tarts are always a welcome addition to any fall table. While the apple can be the star of many dishes, it can also play an excellent supporting role in many sweet and savory items as well. Some suggestions:

Baked Apples with dried cherries and maple syrup- (Martha Stewart) -4 apples 1/3 cup dried cherries, golden raisins or mix 1/3 cup walnut pieces 1/3 cup maple syrup 2 Tablespoons butter 3 Tablespoons sour cream 3 Tablespoons crushed gingersnaps----

Core apples with melon baller or apple corer creating a 3/4 inch wide cavity. Peel top half of apples. Stuff with cherries and walnuts, brush each with 1/2 T butter, drizzle with maple syrup and arrange in a baking dish. Bake 350 for 45-60 minutes. Transfer apples to plate, whisk cooking liquid from apples into sour cream, drizzle over apples, top with crushed gingersnaps.

Butternut Squash and apple soup- peel, de-seed and roast one butternut squash. Chop small white onion, garlic and sauté with cooked butternut squash. Add finely diced peeled apple, apple cider and herb of your choice. Rosemary, thyme or sage in any combination or solo, chopped finely. Thin with vegetable stock and cider, cook and puree for soup.

Cabbage and Apple coleslaw-A twist on classic coleslaw, the sweeter the apple the less need for added sugar. Shred Purple cabbage (green is fine too) diced apple, diced white onion, poppy seeds. In a separate bowl whisk mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar, salt, pepper and a little cream or buttermilk. Combine with cabbage mix, adjust seasonings.

Apple, Cheddar and Bacon biscuits- add finely dice apples and dice bacon (cooked) to a good biscuit recipe or mix. Top with shredded cheddar

Apple cider is a welcome addition to many dishes, enhancing a pan sauce for roast chicken or pork, sweetening a marinade, etc. Try roasting root vegetables (celery root, carrots, parsnips, rutabaga squash..) with apple cider and fresh herbs. In addition for Thanksgiving a nice glaze of olive oil, orange juice and apple cider works well with a turkey stuffed with sage, garlic, almonds and apples.

Also hot apple cider is a great tonic to chilly autumn evenings; try adding cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, fresh ginger or star anise for a warming affect. Make it boozy by adding calvados or a good brandy. Fresh herbs like rosemary are nice as well.

Special Announcement

Please make sure you arrive for your volunteer shift. They will be available fresh for pickup at the CSA pickup immediately before Thanksgiving. We have Bourbon Red, Broad-Breasted white, and Broad-Breasted bronze turkeys this year.

The Bourbon Reds are a slow-growing heritage breed of turkey, with more dark meat and a more pronounced flavor. They originated in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Our Bourbons live in the field where they are able to fly for short distances. They also like to escape from their enclosure, but always find their way back in. Bourbon turkeys are more expensive because they grow more slowly and require more time, effort, and feed to raise. They are $6 per pound and are likely to be smaller birds.

The Broad-Breasted white and bronze turkeys are a faster-growing modern hybrid. They are the standard turkey of the industry and are the same breed of bird most people buy in the grocery store. White and Bronze turkeys differ just in the color of their feathers (which they will not have when they get to you). These turkeys are superior in flavor to store-bought turkeys because they are rotated through the pasture where they can eat bugs and large amounts of grass. Because our turkeys exercise more than industrially-raised birds, you may find more dark meat on them as well. They will be large birds and are $3.50/lb.

We purchased all of our birds as day-old chicks. All of our turkeys are fed an all-vegetarian grain feed with no hormones or antibiotics, which was developed specially for us by our local feed mill, much of which is grown here in New York state. We are proud of the unique flavor and high quality of all our free-range, and pasture-raised turkeys which some CSA members had a chance to see upon their visits to the farm.

Turkeys can be reserved by sending us a $20 deposit in the mail to: Garden of Eve, PO Box 216, Aquebogue NY 11931, along with the following information:
Your name and address, phone, email
credit card number and expiration date
bird weight preference: 8-12 lbs, 134-15 lbs, 16 lbs or more.
We will do our best to match the birds to your request but, because our birds are raised outdoors and we cannot control every factor in their growth, we cannot guarantee that your bird will be a specific size.

All turkeys must be picked up at the CSA pickup immediately before Thanksgiving and they will be fresh, not frozen.

If you have any questions about turkey sales, please contact us directly at farmer@gardenofevefarm.com.

not a vegetable but a g4 computer for sale

PowerMac G4 tower desktop w/ lots of cool apps - $600
Reply to: metabreed+g4@gmail.com

I'm negotiable on the price, contact me!

-Operating System-OSX
-667 mHz
-60 GB Ultra ATA Harddrive
-1.25 GB RAM (upgraded)
-CD Drive (CD-RW)

Includes Software:
Adobe Photoshop CS, Illustrator CS, Flash MX, Microsoft Office X, OSX, Mail, Safari, Sherlock, iLife (itunes, iphoto, imovie), Classic environment, Acrobat Reader, great Designer fonts, and loads more.

It's a nice computer, exterior has no scratches. Then red ones inked up and that hunger
Sent us out with milk cans, pea tins, jam-pots
Where briars scratched and wet grass bleached our boots.
Round hayfields, cornfields and potato-drills
We trekked and picked until the cans were full,
Until the tinkling bottom had been covered
With green ones, and on top big dark blobs burned
Like a plate of eyes. Our hands were peppered
With thorn pricks, our palms sticky as Bluebeard's.

We hoarded the fresh berries in the byre.
But when the bath was filled we found a fur,
A rat-grey fungus, glutting on our cache.
The juice was stinking too. Once off the bush
The fruit fermented, the sweet flesh would turn sour.
I always felt like crying. It wasn't fair
That all the lovely canfuls smelt of rot.
Each year I hoped they'd keep, knew they would not.

Recipes

Anyone with a good recipe idea for the purslane (sp?)

Wanna Swap???

A week share needs to swap with B week share.
